In the past 15 years, with the success and ease of the internet, the homosexual and transgendered community has begun to fabricate a voice for themselves, not just on a local scale, but rather globally. What was once an assemblage who spent their lives in the "closet", are now roaming the streets parading, loving, and enjoying the freedom they now have; however, all countries do not guarantee these freedoms. Mark Zuckerberg, a successful Internet programmer and computer wizard, the man who is also responsible for the creation of Facebook, is an avid supporter of the homosexual community (Rudolph). Throughout Mezrichs’ novel, Marc showed an avid support for people of all skin colours and ethnicities, despite the fact that he did not care about what people thought of him. Facebook itself is one of the major Internet sites that allow the LGBT community to express and share their thoughts and opinions. The LGBT support of the website is a major advantage to the overall success of Facebook as they increase the number of users dramatically. Facebook even has a float in the annual San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration, one that he even attends himself (Rodriguez). Despite Mark's attraction to women, the whole reason that Facebook was created in the first place, he still chooses to support every kind of person, despite their sexuality, skin colour, or beliefs (Mezrich). Before the creation of Facebook, Mark was discriminated for being different; therefore, he would likely support those who are going through the same problems (Mezrich). Mark would view the political issues in Russia as a chance to further his business, by allowing Facebook to be used by various opposition groups to increase awareness and help gain supporters. Supporting the LGBT gives Mark an extra boost of followers that will increase the overall popularity of his website over time (Mezrich). Therefore, he would without a doubt support a boycott of the Olympic games.
